Currently Reading

D.G.D.: My latest comic book discovery; Lea Hernandez's alternate history steampunk-inspired sf set in Texas, featuring a steam-powered computer built inside a cathedral, some political pushing and shoving, and a love story that quickly manages to be endearing and sexy.

D.G.D.: I always fret when reading something like this that I'm not getting the best version, but I suppose the Brothers Grimm don't have a definitive version anyway since they edited their own work so many times. One way or the other, this edition has nice binding, gold-gilt pages, and the promise of containing all the stories--except I think it's missing "Bluebeard."

Snuffles: An introduction to Japanese pop subculture, at least as it stood in 1999 when the book was produced. Overviews anime, cult films, noise, J-pop, and manga. Self-consciously raw and edgy in presentation, the book slides easily from informative to opinionated to disturbing.

Currently Watching

Snuffles: A sequel of sorts to the Sukeban Deka TV series, based on a manga. Follows a teenage undercover cop armed with a deadly yo-yo as she infiltrates an elite high school to destroy a cabal of terrorists. With that premise, you might expect a zany action movie, but it's actually a depressing drama about teen suicide with sparse action sequences and not nearly enough cool yo-yo stunts.
