The trailer for The Golden Compass is out. The novels are primarily a vehicle for Philip Pullman to make vitriolic attacks on Christianity, though he does manage a few significant artistic accomplishments in the midst of the stilted prose, sentimentality, and hate-speeches. One of his goals for the novels, if I remember, was to produce a fantasy epic fully realized but divorced utterly from Tolkien's universe. He mostly succeeded, but his universe on close examination is self-contradictory and garbled.
